News Brexit Update – No changes until 2021 for those travelling to the UK

Hotels & More, the B2B destination specialist for group and individual travel to Great Britain and Ireland, provides information on the current status in relation to Brexit. With the adoption of the Transitional Agreement by the House of Commons and the European Parliament, the United Kingdom will leave the European Union today, January 31st, at midnight European Central Time. At the same time, the United Kingdom is entering a transition phase until December 2020 in which future UK-EU relations will be negotiated in the form of a free trade agreement.

Nothing will change for travel to the UK during the transition period until at least 2021.

•    Travelers from the 27 EU or EEA countries and Switzerland will not require a visa for a stay of up to 3 months.

•    Since the United Kingdom (as well as the Republic of Ireland) never joined the Schengen Agreement, EU citizens will always require a valid passport or identity card for entry. The same applies to citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.

•    EU travellers can continue to travel on ID cards until at least 2021. In 2021, new entry regulations in the UK will come into force, whereby entry with an identity card will gradually be no longer possible. This will occur step by step and as soon as it can be put into practice.
•    We recommend using a valid biometric passport for entry, especially for air travel. Travellers with a biometric passport can use the E-Gates for quick and easy entry to the UK.

•    Flights, trains, ferries and coaches will continue to operate between the EU and the UK, and vice-versa. Passengers across the continent can continue to book and travel with confidence as they travel on their holidays to the UK.

•    Travellers with an EU driving license will still be able to drive in Great Britain. You will not need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

•    EU citizens are still able to use a valid Health Insurance (EHIC) card until at least 2021. The rights of individuals covered by the citizens’ rights agreements with Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland will not be affected.

The UK government has also compiled extensive information for EU citizens on entry and residence in the UK: In addition, VisitBritain has published a useful video:
